About Muskellunge (Muskie)

The muskellunge - "the fish of 10,000 casts" - is Minnesota's ultimate trophy fish. These apex predators grow to massive sizes and test even expert anglers with their intelligence and explosive strikes. While catching a muskie requires patience and dedication, landing one is an achievement every serious angler dreams of.

🏞️Habitat

Muskies prefer large, clear lakes with abundant forage. They relate to deep weed edges, rocky structures, and open-water humps. In summer, they often patrol weed edges in 8-20 feet of water. Fall muskies follow cisco and whitefish schools into deeper water. Prime muskie lakes include Leech, Vermilion, Mille Lacs, and Cass Lake.

🔍Identification

  • Long, torpedo body (similar to pike but larger)
  • Light body with dark vertical bars or spots
  • Pointed tail fin (pike is rounded)
  • Only lower half of cheek has scales
  • Typically 36-48 inches, can exceed 54 inches
  • Dark bar under eye, not teardrop

🎣How to Catch Muskellunge (Muskie)

Best Techniques

  • Casting large bucktails along weed edges
  • Trolling magnum crankbaits
  • Figure-8s at boatside (critical!)
  • Topwater on calm evenings
  • Live bait under floats (big suckers)

Best Baits

  • Large bucktail spinners (double 10s)
  • Bulldawg-style soft plastics
  • Magnum crankbaits and jerkbaits
  • Topwater props and walk-the-dogs
  • Large suckers (8-12 inch) live

📅Seasonal Patterns

Summer

Prime season. Fish weed edges morning/evening. Full moon nights are best.

Fall

Trophy time. Big females feed before winter. Follow baitfish to deep structure.

Early Season

Season opens June 7 to protect spawning fish. First weeks can be good.

Ice Fishing

Not recommended - catch-and-release mortality too high through ice.

💡Pro Tips

  • 1Always do a figure-8 at boatside - many muskies strike following the bait
  • 2Keep hooks razor sharp - muskies have bony mouths
  • 3Invest in quality release tools - these fish deserve respect
  • 4Moon phases matter - fish the full and new moon periods
  • 5Change up your retrieve constantly until you find what they want
